Dance & Movement

Counselling

For me, dance counselling holds a unique and transformative potential because it connects mind, body, and spirit in a holistic way. It’s a method that directly engages with how we experience and process our emotions through the body, recognizing that our bodies hold both our past and present stories.

Movement allows us to access a deeper part of ourselves, often bypassing the mental defenses that can inhibit emotional expression. Through dance, we can begin to express what’s been silenced, to free ourselves from the restrictions of the past, and to reconnect with our inner sense of agency.

How does a session look like?

A session often begins with arriving — taking a moment to notice how you feel as you enter the space. We might start seated or standing, bringing awareness to your breath, your feet on the ground, the rhythm of your heartbeat. Sometimes I guide you through a gentle warm-up or a body scan to help you settle and sense what is alive in you that day. From there, we move slowly into exploration. Perhaps there is something on your mind, a feeling you want to understand, or a question that doesn’t have words yet. Through movement, we begin to listen to how the body responds — how it opens, resists, contracts, or expands. I might invite you to notice where tension gathers, what gestures feel natural, what shapes or rhythms your body wants to express. The focus is not on choreography but on awareness — how motion and stillness reveal something true. Sometimes this means standing still and feeling your weight shift, other times it becomes a flowing, spontaneous dance.

In deeper moments of the session, we might work with imagery or creative tools to explore what emerges. For example, you might use ribbons to mark out different areas of your life — family, work, friendship — and then move between them, observing how your body changes in each space. Maybe your breath becomes shallow in one area, or your shoulders relax in another. You might use two pillows to represent yourself and someone you’re in conflict with, moving between them to explore perspective and emotion. Sometimes we use color or imagination — sensing what hue your energy carries today, or how that color shifts as you move. These exercises make the internal visible, allowing both insight and release. At the end of the session, we return to stillness, perhaps journaling, drawing, or speaking about what was felt. It’s a time to integrate — to connect body and mind, to give language to movement. Every session is an invitation to meet yourself with curiosity and compassion, to listen to what your body has been waiting to tell you.

Common Questions about Dance Counselling

Do I need to be able to dance to come to a counselling?

No, not at all. Dance therapy is a movement based approach to therapy bringing attention back to our body and with that helping us process things. I firmly believe that everyone can dance but we have a lot of limitating view on what dance should look like. It is about you and your body and there is no wrong or right in this space.

Why aren't you offering therapy only counselling ?

I finished my dance therapy apprenticeship this summer at Neuraum in Berlin. Thought to be able to call myself a therapist I need to get the "Heilpraktiker für Psychotherapy". In the meantime I can offer counselling and workshops.
